Girl and I worked on writing Halloween haikus today (part of the homeschooling and all). Hers reads:
Halloween
Halloween darkness
Boo! Ghosts and witches, Bats fly
Ooo! and vampires
Mine reads:
Halloween Theft
Dressed as a gypsy
Nasty boys stole her candy
I gave her my gum
True story.
————————
A handful of hours after Haiku Time, we headed out for recess. During our walk, I took photos. Here is one, with accompanying haiku:
Stairway to Heaven
If you build a mosque
Eventually it falls
This is what remains
I, of course, read "gun".
Then read it again to be sure.
My version is best
Damned if I can get rid of that extra syllable in the second line
– Jazz
Which one has the extra syllable for you, Ms. Jazz? I realized today how often syllable count ties into personal accent; turns out my hubs and I pronounce "Eventually" with the same number of syllables (5)–but I can see many folks finding it has 4.
Yeah, I just went back and counted syllables in all three middle lines. All 7's. But I think Jazz means her own haiku answer.
(Word verification is "repent"!!)
That is incredible–I'm a sucker for any kind of path; even one to nowhere.
Your page is great still,
I read on without self will.
Happy Halloween.

p.s. – I found out while living abroad that people in other countries don't appreciate mischief night.
My daughter couldn't find pumpkins for Halloween or that holiday on the third Thursday in November that no one in any other country celebrates….we seem to think that holiday is universal for some reason….so-any jack-o-lanterns for you?
Very impressive photo and haiku poems! Your daughter's is very good. Okay, so are you, and Jazz, and secret agent, and diane. I won't even try.
jeez you friggin kick ass
OMG Brill.
That? Was awesome. But the photo? Breathtaking.
Now to try Haiku
Learned a new word "Brill" from Jim Awestruck by that pic
Fascinated and entertained (as usual) by your blog, Jocelyn!
Joy
I love that last photo. It's gorgeous! I just left a comment at your other site and forgot to say: I can't wait to read all about it!
I love haikus. Efficient yet lyrical.
Pearl
Excellent! My mind is too addled to come up with a haiku of my own, so I'll just say those are impressive, as is that fabulous photo! 🙂
Home-schooled haiku in Turkey? This is your life, Jocelyn! Like everyone else, I am floored by that last photo. Amazing light.
@ haphazardlife. You could get rid of "Then" or "it", or change "to be sure" to "to check"
( I need to get a life!)
Jocelyn What a great pic!
Ghosts are on the loose
Witches and goblins and spooks
Oo a oo a oo!
Hi Jocelyn,
Any friend of Deborah's must be an interesting person at least. So I came to take a look.
What I find is the above i.p., a very interesting blog and some funny ideas.
Blame Deborah if this comment irritates you.
oh, your true haiku speaks volumes in the few syllables.
the photo is haunting and lonely but beautiful.
Those are great! I LOVE haiku, and am quite thrilled with your home-schooling curriculum.
Nice. What can be said re: mosques can be said about Walmart, I hope.
Sounds like the perfect lesson. I want to do recess with you.
That photo's the best thing I've seen all week .
Slowly, slowly, slowly catching up & was going to save comments for the latest, but this photo is beyond words…
Love the haikus and Paco's video from earlier. Also, if you keep getting caught in the rain all the time, you must either invest in a poncho or give up running altogether. I mean, that's twice, by my count, that you've been ambushed by lightning without a cave (or a monastery). Not a comfortable statistic (nor for you–duh). We need you around for more of this!!!
